COMFORT OVER DISCIPLINE; THE SILENT CRISIS OF OUR TIME
The world we live in today is changing at a very fast pace. "What is" changes so much to "What was" in a very short period. And in all of those changes, "What is trending" rules everything.
How many times have we seen one viral song or dance, a 15-30 seconds challenge, one online influencer's routine or style... And suddenly, millions of people are doing the same thing. But talk about Discipline? Our day to day hustles and hurdles? The efforts we're putting in to stay on the right course? All of these are nowhere to be found on the trending page. And because many of us enjoy the irrelevant aspects of life, we're drowning in problems, that actually were not supposed to exist.
Let's think about some things together. Today, the level of health crisis that we suffer, from obesity, diabetes, anxiety, depression to heart diseases, kidney failure, liver problems and cancer, might not be as high as it is. They are rampant in our society today not because we don't know what to do to stay away from the causes of those things, but because the discipline to a healthy life is not that fancy. I've seen more than enough of different meal plans, fitness apps, self-care contents and I know we have enough therapists that are always ready to help, but then, how come many of us still find it difficult to stick to a simple routine or stop eating some variety of foods? Why? Because discipline isn't a good looking thing to us and it doesn't give you that instant vibe we get from other contents on social media.
Discipline would ask you to wake up when others are sleeping, to go for water when others go for soda or even alcoholic drinks. But because we can't actually focus and we lack that discipline-vibe in us, we wrap all of these things in the shades of discomfort.
Another aspect where many of lack discipline is Finance. We're living wages, salaries, paycheck, payslip and all but still, we're kind of always in debt. Where is the discipline in that? Or is it the procrastination that comes with it? Personally, I remember it took me some time from going from "I will start saving next month" to actually putting in those savings, even though it felt like that particular month would never never come.
Discipline is being able to see the big things while understanding the importance of the pieces that make the whole. Discipline is knowing that the trips and fancy bounties are work of years, waking up at the right time to grind, investing before spending and saying NO to unnecessary things, and that would prevent us in a good way from the money problems most people cry about.
Another hot topic where the lack of discipline becomes obvious is in relationships. Many relationships today are broken because we can't stick to the standards and discipline of what being together actually means. Situationship that goes on for a long time, the ghosting, cheating of every sort, lack of commitment are all caused by Indiscipline in relationships. Indiscipline in love is wanting soulmates but not showing up consistently for each other, let alone for someone else.
In relationships, there needs to be discipline in communication, in keeping promises, in choosing loyalty over feelings. That's what builds true love, but unfortunately, it's not a trending thing.
How many times have we decided on something, and we failed to execute it? How many times have we had dreams not turning into reality? Preparation of days and months by students to pass exams, only to end up failing? Creativity and Talents that ends up dying because they became an unfinished project? Do we think everything happened because it was just fate? We've got more tools for productivity today than any of the past generations and yet, we are suffering the most from not getting things done. Why? Starting is easy, but to continue the grind when no one is watching or the results ain't very obvious, needs discipline.
Have you ever been locked to your phone from evening till the early hours of the next morning? Scrolling till 4am? How many of us have the ability to sit in silence for 10 minutes without having thousands of thoughts going through our minds? It shows we lack discipline with our minds as well. Our attention abilities are screwed up because we all want peace of mind, but it lacks the discipline to create it.
The painful truth about many of these things we've talked about is that they are problems of today that could be avoided if only we go by the rules of discipline that come with them, but since they are self-inflicted, they are hard to scrap off because our daily lifestyles have gotten used to choosing comfort over discipline... And for many, it's creating short-term pleasure over long-term peace.
Imagine if Discipline in every aspect of our lives become the trend today. If we all start to wake up at the early hours, did our routines properly and follow up with character development stuff than the views we give for twerk challenges. If NO to distraction was the start up caption everyone wants to copy, if only the young people of today would brag about how many books we've read and not how many outfits we've got. If Parents are teaching their children that consistency and discipline overlaps talents alone every single time.
Have you read a quote by Sir Alex Ferguson when he once said "Hard work will always overcome natural talent when natural talent does not work hard enough".
If we choose discipline over comfort in most aspects of our lives, a lot of these things would result in less number of diseases and ailments in our society, stronger family bonds, less crime will be committed by youths and more millionaires can be created from humble homes.
Discipline isn't about being perfect, it's about being consistent when what motivates suddenly disappears. It's waking up and doing the hard thing when you don't feel like it. It's holding up and keeping the promises you made to yourself when nobody else is watching.
Discipline is a compound thing. It doesn't just build itself up, it takes consistency, putting in the hard work, to get moving before the going gets tough and after. And never forget that one disciplined day would not change your life. But when you put in the efforts for days, months and years, that's when the miracles that come with it happens. That's when the version of you that you've always wanted would start to show up.
I guess this is the time we stop waiting for discipline to trend. Maybe we should become the trend ourselves and make sure that Discipline becomes a way of life.
Whatever it is you want to start today, do it. Not tomorrow, not after this weekend, don't wait till month end or only when you feel motivated.
We've talked about how knowledge teaches about the 'what' but it's discipline that teaches us 'how'. We need to choose one area of our lives right now... Money, Health, Learning, Relationship or even Faith and decide to be disciplined in it for the next 30 days. No slip ups, no do overs, no excuses. Because if discipline is able to stay with us beyond those 30 days, many of our problems will cease to exist. And the beautiful thing about it, you don't need the whole world to trend it. You only need it to trend and to thrive in your own life.
The moment something of such becomes a way of life, when we have enough of us doing that, the world will have no choice but to catch up.
Discipline isn't just a personal development thing anymore, it must go round in significant aspect of the lives of those around us. Once we attain it ourselves, we must help them through it as well. It's more like giving others the light from yours as well. And that way, when everyone is lit up, it brings more brightness into the room. That's like taking many of their problems away for them.
We must all be ready to make sure that Discipline not only becomes a trend or go viral in the day to day activities of everyone, it must become a standard that everyone must attain and stick by. Let's stop complaining about problems we have the power to solve.
With Discipline, every problem walks in with its solution alongside it.
