ONE GOOD MENTOR CAN CHANGE YOUR ENTIRE LIFE DIRECTION
Many of us today, with myself inclusive, claim that "this person" or "that so called person" is my mentor, but are we really making use of that idea of making a good example out of them or just tapping what we feel we want to take from them without understanding what true mentorship? Let's see how far you've gone with your own mentor(s).
In our world today, many of us are confused, trying to figure out what exactly to do with our lives or where to start or pick up from and most importantly, many are distracted. In all of these chaos, where do we get our ideas of finding peace? What door do we knock in order to know which way we need to go through to make sure the problem doesn't hit on us.
All of these mind-pausing thoughts can be sorted out through the right guidance from choosing the right people to look up to as an example.
Sometimes ago, I remember someone telling me that you can tell what a person is trying to become by checking who they keep as their mentor(s). And to a significant extent, I couldn't disagree.
A mentor doesn't just give you advices, share insights or give answers to some of our questions, they give us clarity. They help us see things we might have missed while we were trying to figure out life all alone and guide us when we eventually misstep. And sometimes, they even push us to come out of our comfort zone when we lag and make sure we get our goals faster than when we were trying to do it all by ourselves.
At times when you're in solitary, I try to juggle through some of those people I've said I wanted to be like them in a way or the other and try to find the similarities, the differences in ideology and everything that sum them up. The only conclusion I settled with was that they all got it right the moment they were starting. And why was that? They had good mentors.
Many of us are not failing today because we're lazy, it might be because we lack true guidance. We can either spend years of our lives making mistakes we could have avoided or learn from someone who have walked that path before us. Someone I'm close to would always say "Don't ask about the medicines from the doctor, ask someone who was cured from such ailment". And don't you agree that such person would give up more information than the doctor? That's what true mentorship looks like. They are ready to give you the right informations that are needed when you're up close to ask them about it.
At KOR Academy and AL-IKRAM Islamic Institute, we believe that growth is not just about the information, it's more about the direction, because knowledge without direction will result to confusion. We're reminded that even in faith, mentorship matters.
Our teachers, the scholars and everyone trying to impact knowledge doesn't just serve as people giving us information, they are guides because their knowledge carries direction that can help us get to our journey faster and better.
The Prophet (SAW) not only shared the word of Allah with us, he mentored hearts, he shaped character and transformed lives. That's mentorship at its peak.
So we need to ask ourselves the hard questions?
Who are the people we've chosen as mentor(s)?
Who is that person you would ask for advices?
If you think you've done it wrong, who is correcting you?
Who is guiding you and who is helping you become better?
For all of these questions, if you have no one or you've got the wrong person in place, you might be moving in your pursuit but not progressing. And in life, the right direction is more important than fast forward.
Choose your mentors wisely because one right voice can change everything. And don't forget, Growth is all about moving in the right direction, one step at a time.
