THE HIDDEN COST OF POLYGAMY: WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN?

Polygamy is one of the most discussed family structures in many societies. While much attention is often given to the rights and responsibilities of husbands and wives, the experiences of children are sometimes overlooked. Yet, children are often the most affected by the decisions made within a family.

It is important to approach this conversation with fairness and balance. Polygamy itself is not automatically harmful, nor is every polygamous family dysfunctional. There are homes where justice, compassion, responsibility and mutual respect exist, allowing children to grow up in healthy environments. However, when the principles of fairness and responsibility are neglected, children often bear the greatest burden.

One of the most common challenges children face in troubled polygamous homes is emotional neglect. When a parent struggles to divide attention fairly among multiple households, some children may feel ignored, unloved or less valued than their siblings. Over time, these feelings can affect their self-esteem and emotional development.

Another challenge is the development of rivalry and resentment among children from different mothers. Instead of seeing one another as brothers and sisters, they may grow up viewing each other as competitors for affection, resources, inheritance or recognition. Such tensions can continue well into adulthood, damaging family relationships for generations.

Financial strain is another reality that cannot be ignored. Raising children requires significant resources. When a parent expands the family without the means to adequately support every household, children's education, healthcare, nutrition and overall welfare may suffer. In such cases, the consequences are often felt most deeply by the children.

Children may also experience psychological stress when they witness frequent conflicts between parents or between different households. Constant exposure to arguments, jealousy and hostility can create feelings of insecurity and anxiety. Many children carry these emotional wounds into adulthood, affecting their future relationships and their understanding of family life.

In some cases, unequal treatment among wives can indirectly lead to unequal treatment among children. When children perceive favoritism, they may develop feelings of bitterness, rejection or inferiority. Such experiences can leave lasting emotional scars that persist long after childhood.

Islam recognizes the seriousness of these issues. While Islam permits polygamy under specific circumstances, it also places a heavy emphasis on justice, fairness, responsibility and accountability. The permission is not a license for oppression, neglect or irresponsibility. Rather, it comes with conditions that are often easier to discuss than to fulfill.

The reality is that many of the problems associated with polygamy arise not from the institution itself, but from human failure to uphold the standards of justice required within it. When fairness disappears, children often become the silent victims.

As societies, communities and families, we must remember that every decision involving marriage and family should prioritize the wellbeing of children. Children deserve love, stability, security, guidance and equal treatment regardless of the structure of the home in which they are raised.

A healthy family is not measured merely by the number of people in it, but by the quality of care, responsibility, compassion and justice that exists within it.

The future of every society depends on the emotional, moral and psychological wellbeing of its children. Therefore, any discussion about marriage, family and relationships must always include the question:

How will this affect the children?
