FEMINISM: EQUALITY, PRIVILEGE AND RESPONSIBILITY

Few words in modern society generate as much debate as feminism. To some, it represents justice, fairness and the correction of historical inequalities. To others, it has evolved beyond equality into a movement that sometimes seeks the advantages of both traditional and modern roles without consistently embracing the responsibilities attached to either.


The conversation has become so polarized that many people no longer ask an important question: What does true equality actually mean?


Equality is not simply the demand for equal rights. It is also the willingness to accept equal responsibilities, equal accountability and equal consequences.


Rights without responsibility eventually become entitlement. Privileges without accountability eventually become injustice.


This principle applies to everyone men and women alike.


There is no doubt that women have faced genuine discrimination throughout history. Many were denied education, property ownership, political participation and opportunities to contribute their talents to society. These injustices deserved to be challenged and many of the legal and social reforms that followed brought positive change.


Every society benefits when women are educated, protected, respected and given opportunities to develop their abilities. But somewhere along the way, parts of modern feminism appear to have shifted from seeking equality before the law to seeking selective equality embracing equal rights when they are beneficial while sometimes rejecting equal responsibilities when they are inconvenient.


This is where many people begin to question the movement. For example, some advocate complete equality in leadership positions, political influence and financial independence, yet still expect men to carry the traditional responsibilities of providing, protecting, initiating relationships, paying expenses and assuming greater risks.


If equality means sharing opportunities, should it not also mean sharing burdens? Can society honestly demand equal authority while maintaining unequal responsibility?


Likewise, men are not exempt from criticism. Some men insist on traditional authority within the family while neglecting the traditional responsibilities of provision, protection, emotional maturity and sacrificial leadership. Authority without responsibility is equally problematic.


The issue, therefore, is not feminism alone. The issue is inconsistency. Healthy societies are built on balance.


Rights should be accompanied by responsibilities. Freedom should be accompanied by accountability. Power should be accompanied by service.


No relationship, workplace or society can function sustainably if one group continually expects benefits while transferring obligations to others.


This discussion becomes especially important within marriage. Marriage is not a competition over who has more rights. It is a partnership built upon mutual sacrifice.


A husband who constantly asks, "What do I deserve?" will damage his home.


A wife who constantly asks the same question will do likewise. Healthy marriages survive because both partners ask a different question: "What can I contribute?"


Contribution builds trust. Entitlement destroys it.


This is not an argument against women's rights.


Neither is it an argument for male privilege. It is an argument for consistency.


If we believe in equality, then we must believe in equality that includes responsibility not only equality that delivers benefits.


Society cannot thrive when everyone competes for privileges while avoiding obligations.


The strongest individuals are not those who demand the most. They are those who carry the greatest responsibilities with integrity.


Perhaps the future of meaningful equality lies not in asking whether men or women have more rights.


Perhaps the better question is: Are we becoming people who are equally willing to serve, sacrifice, lead and be accountable?


Because genuine equality is not measured by how many privileges we obtain.


It is measured by how faithfully we carry the responsibilities that come with them.
